One issue that I didn’t mention in the opening was the defence. With 42 goals conceded so far this season, they sit at dissapointing 8th in the goals conceded table (see below), level with 17th place Brighton and below 9th place Arsenal. That is unacceptable for a title challenging team, and that would be even lower had Captain Harry Maguire not been available for every game this season.

So who would be players to bring it at centre half to improve United’s defence?

1. Sergio Ramos

The legendary Spanish defender is out of contract with Real Madrid in the summer, and Los Blancos have made it clear they will not bow to his demands and are set on letting him go. At the age of 35, Ramos would be a stopgap, Cavani-like signing until a long term replacement could be sourced, but despite his age would still be an incredible signing.

Injuries have affected the World Cup and Euro’s winner, having only made 15 appearances in La Liga this season, but he is still performing at the top level when he does play, helping Real Madrid to a European semi final and still challenging for the title in La Liga. With a whopping 180 Caps to his name and over 100 goals for his club, the Spaniard would be a welcome addition slotting next to Harry Maguire for United next season.

2. Sven Botman

A lower profile name on the list, but not less impressive. Sven Botman has shot into the public eye after some solid performances in Ligue 1. The Lille defender has helped his club to the cusp of lifting their first title since Giroud fired “Les Douges” to the Championship in 2011, with the 6 foot 4 Dutchman playing every game so far.

The former Ajax man has said in interviews he would “be lying” if he denied being interesting in moving to clubs like United or Liverpool, with both clubs reportedly set to place bids for the Dutchman in the summer. Botman is known for his commanding style, and could fill in for Harry Maguire whenever the Englishman needs a rest.
