The inclusion of classic players and footballing legends is one of the biggest selling points of Ultimate Team, EA’s online card-trading football game, and everyone is excited to see which classic players will join the roster.

With legends like Pele, Zidane, Ronaldinho and Beckham, some of the greatest legends of the game have been immortalised in FIFA 23, you would be forgiven to think that EA Sports had exhausted the list of football legends to include in their franchise.

However, if you keep reading this article you can learn about some of the FIFA 23 New Icons which could be added to FIFA 23 when the game releases later this year (expected to be around September)

FIFA 23 New Icons

Paul Gascoigne

One of the most request new FIFA 23 Icons is England legend Paul Gascoigne. Lovingly referred to as “Gazza”, the midfielder from Newcastle played himself into the nations hearts due to a spirited performance at EURO 1996. His goal against Scotland in the group stages remains one of the greatest England goals of all time.

During his club career, he played for top clubs all across Europe, including Newcastle, Tottenham, Lazio and Rangers. His talent was so immense, mixed with his good nature and hilarious tales from him playing days, has led to him be revered as a legend at almost every club he has played for.

While his off the field troubles are well documented, he is still one of the most wanted Icons in FIFA 23 and would be an incredible addition to an already stacked list of English legends on the game.

Edgar Davids

One legend who has been overlooked by FIFA is the Dutch icon Edgar Davids. The former Juventus and Spurs midfielder is one of the most recongnisable midfielders of all time, with his long dreadlocks and glasses make him impossible to miss on a football pitch.

He was of the best midfielders in his day and was the envy of any team that managed to secure his services. He has previously appeared on the FIFA box art, being a cover star in 2004 alongside Thierry Henry and Alessandro Del Piero, so it is time for him to return home as a new FIFA 23 icon card

Alfredo Di Stefano

FIFA has never had an Icon card with more than one nationality – but that could all change with addition of one of FIFA 23 new icons. Real Madrid legend Alfredo Di Stefano starred for not one, not two but THREE national teams. He made appearances for Argentina, Colombia and later Spain, something that would be allowed to happen in the modern game.

Di Stefano was the star of the Real Madrid side that won the first five European Cups in a row. He played 282 times for Los Blancos, scoring an incredible 216 goals on his way to becoming a legend for the club. He even nearly went on loan to Manchester United, whilst being one of the best players in the world, as a favour to The Red Devils after the horrific Munich air disaster. Although the move blocked by the Football Association, he was selfless enough to put his career on the line to help others.

His FIFA 23 Icon cards would be unique as he could have 3 cards all with different nationalities. This would increase the possibilist of hybrids, depending on which card you got, and would be a unique addition for FIFA 23 new icons.

Bobby Charlton

One of the English greats who has been overlooked by FIFA for too long, Sir Bobby Charlton deserves be included as a FIFA 23 new icon. The World Cup and European Cup winning Englishmen is one of the greatest players of all time, being the second Englishman to win the award (after Stanley Matthews).

Sir Bobby Charlton is a legend of the game, having faced adversity in his career and triumphed over it with grit, determination and skill. He was a victim of the Munich Air Crash in 1958, surviving the plane crash and going on to win the European Cup with Manchester United just ten years later.

He also helped lead England to World Cup glory in 1966, the same year he was awarded the Balon D’or best player award. He was also the all-time top scorer for England, despite playing in a more attacking midfield role, until being overtaken by Wayne Rooney in 2015. He was also the Manchester United all time top scorer, until he was again beaten by Wayne Rooney, this time in 2017 with Rooney’s free kick against Stoke City.

John Charles

John Charles FIFA 23 ICON.

The “Gentle Giant” John Charles would be most of the most interesting FIFA 23 new icons if was added to the game this year. The Juventus legend was best known for his time spent in Turin, where he became one of their greatest players and is consistently voted their best foreign player in history.

John Charles is also known for his time playing for the Wales national team. In 1958, he led Wales to the Quarter Finals of the FIFA World Cup to a tie against eventual winners Brazil. He was one of the best players in the world and in the tournament that year, but suffered an injury before the match and missed a clash against Pele’s Brazil. Wales lost 1-0 to Brazil after Pele scored his first ever goal for Brazil, but many historians have theories that if Charles had played for Wales that day, they would have beaten Brazil and could have gone all the way and won the World Cup.

John Charles would be one of the most interesting new Icons in FIFA 23, due to the positions he played. During his career he was known as one of the best strikers in the world and one of the best defenders. He would regularly score a goal for Juventus before retreating to defence and finishing the game at the back. This opens up options for both a Striker Icon Card and a Centre Back Icon card, a unique combination that has not been seen before in FIFA.

Matt Le Tissier

One of the best players to have graced the Premier League is Guernsey native Matt Le Tissier. Known to Southampton fans as “Le God”, the attacking midfielder became an icon at St Mary’s due to his incredible skill, amazing goal scoring ability and nonchalant attitude to football.

He was the ultimate luxary player. One you had to build the team around to unlock his incredible ability, but once you did you had one of the finest attacking midfielders the English game had to offer.

Some of the goals he scored were incredible and some even impossible to recreate in FIFA, although if Matt Le Tissier is added as a FIFA 23 Icon, I’m sure players will try their best.
