First Ever One on One Ladder Match in AEW history announced

Cody Rhodes, Sammy Guevara

Cody Rhodes has challenge Sammy Guevara to a match for the TNT Championship at AEW Dynamite: Beach Break next week. Rhodes is the current TNT Champion, whilst Guevara defeated his brother Dustin Rhodes to become the interim TNT Champion early this month at AEW Battle of the Belts.

On last nights episode of AEW Dynamite, Cody Rhodes came to the ring to cut a promo holding a ladder in his hand, before setting it up in the ring. In the promo, Cody spoke about how much he’d accomplished in AEW, including being a three time TNT Champion. He also claimed he built the “Forbidden Door” before it was a thing, and mentioned his contract status with AEW. Rhodes is currently without a contract in WWE and speculation is rife on a potential return to WWE in the 2022 Royal Rumble.

During the promo, he challenged Sammy Guevara to a TNT Championship match next week. Live, on AEW Dynamite: Beach Break, he challenged Guevara to a match to crown the undisputed TNT Champion. Guevara has held the interim championship for three weeks, defending it once against Daniel Garcia.

The match between the pair will be a ladder match, which will be a first for AEW. Whilst the “Face of the Revolution” ladder match and Casino Ladder match is a fixture of the company, this will be the first time AEW hosts a one-on-one ladder match. It is another first for Cody Rhodes, who had the first match on AEW Dynamite in history (versus Sammy Guevara funnily enough) and took part in the first cage match in company history (vs Wardlow).
