Last night, Tony Khan announced to the world that Jon Moxley has sought help for an alcohol addiction. Moxley checked himself into a rehabilitation clinic, where he will stay for the foreseeable future to deal with his addiction. A number of wrestlers have announced their support for Jon Moxley online, including WWE hall of famer Mick Foley.
All Elite Wrestler (AEW) boss Tony Khan announced Moxley’s decision on Twitter, with permission from Jon Moxley. He also added that “Jon is a beloved member of the AEW family.”, and “We all stand with him and Renee, and all of his family and friends, as he shifts his focus to recovery.“
Moxley’s position in the company will not be at risk due to his, but his current storylines will be put on hold. He looked to be turning heel, showcasing a new, more violent persona on TV.
His match against Orange Cassidy was set for the November 3rd edition of AEW Dynamite, and has now been canceled.
Support from fellow wrestlers
Support and well wishes have poured in from fellow wrestlers and wrestling personalities. They were lead by the former WWE Champion and one time rival of Jon Moxley, Mick Foley.
Foley said on Twitter, “Wishing Jon the very best. A bold and brave decision – and I know he’ll be back and better than ever. Mox has a heck of a support system, with great fans, and an amazing wife”.
Jon Moxley and Mick Foley have a history in wrestling, albeit brief. In his role as Dean Ambrose in WWE, Moxley engaged in a feud with Mick Foley in 2012.
However, creative difference and Foley’s physical condition meant that a match between the pair never took place. It is one of the more notable WWE matches that never happened, despite WWE building toward it.
A number of other wrestlers have reached out to Moxley, who recently became a father for the first time over the summer. His wife Renee Pacquet, formerly Renee Young in WWE, gave birth to a baby girl called Nora earlier this year.
AEW star Lio Rush tweeted out ““MOX is a good dude. One of the real ones. Pulling for him and @ReneePaquette during this challenging time.”. Rush himself retired earlier this year due to injuries, before returning to wrestling and AEW in the Autumn.
Cash Wheeler, of AAA Tag Team Champions FTR (formerly known as El Super Ranas) simply stated “More respect than ever for John”. (John is Moxley’s real name. His birth name is Jonathan Good.)
Independent wrestling stars also reached out to Moxley on Twitter. Current star Danhausen tweeted, unusually out of character, “Jon rules. Renee rules. Wishing everyone the best in this.”
Future for Jon Moxley
Jon Moxley will not be punished by AEW for getting help with his addiction.
He is expected to return no earlier than a month from now, but is sure to be given as much time as he needs by Tony Khan to help deal with his issues.
The revelation comes at an inopportune time for Moxley, who just released his first book today.
“Mox” is a tell all book, written by the man himself with no outside interference. In the book, he details his struggles with addiction, even referring to himself as “a borderline alcoholic”.
