After his victory on Smackdown last night, WWE stalwart and former US and Tag Team Champion Cesaro has earned himself a title match against the WWE Universal Champion, Roman Reigns. The Swiss Superman defeated Seth Rollins on Friday Night, in a rematch of their Wrestlemania bout, to earn a shot at the Big Dog.
The match, which will be held at Wrestlemania Backlash, will be Cesaro’s first one on one world title opportunity, and his first since the 2015 Royal Rumble, where the Champion Roman Reigns had been forced to put his WWE Championship on the line due to the influence of the Authority. Cesaro also competed for the Championship when it was held by Randy Orton, challenging him and 4 other men inside the Elimination Chamber in 2014, losing.
Cesaro is a multi time Tag team Champion in WWE, and a one time United States champion, but reports of Vince McMhaon not liking the Swiss Cyborg seemed to have put the nail in the coffin of any title push for Cesaro. However, if Cesaro can defeat Reigns, it will be a rare feel good, deserved moment for an underappreciated superstar.
