WWE look to be interested in a return for Matt Cardona and Chelsea Green to the promotion, according to reports this week. With Triple H already expanding his roster with the additions of Bray Wyatt, Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows, he could be looking at even more names to build the most complete roster in wrestling today.
Matt Cardona was released in 2020 during the pandemic, due to “budget cuts”, kicking off one of the best indie runs we’ve seen in a number of years. He reinvented his character as a pro-WWE, anti-independent wrestling heel who tried to make indie wrestling more like the company he just left and showing incredible disrespect to wrestlers like Nick Gage.
He has won a number of Championships since leaving WWE, most notably defeating Nick Gage for the GCW Heavyweight Championship and winning the NWA World Heavyweight Championship from Trevor Murdoch in 2021.
Meanwhile, Matt Cardona’s wife Chelsea Green lasted slightly longer in WWE. She was a star of Tough Enough in 2015, where she finished fourth to eventually winner, Sara Lee. (Lee passed away earlier this week at just aged 30).
Since leaving the company, Chelsea Green has accompanied Matt Cardona to all his major championship reigns and even became a champion herself. She became the Impact Knockouts Tag Team Champion alongside Deonna Purazzo in 2022, although she has since left the promotion due to her contract expiring.
Matt Cardona and Chelsea Green WWE Return
Matt Cardona has recently commented on a potential return to the company. With him and his wife speculated to be returning to the company, the former WWE Intercontinental Champion refused to rule out coming back tot he company that refused to make him a star after his incredible Youtube show made him one of the most popular wrestlers in the world.
During an interview with Metro, Matt Cardona said’
“I’m not trying to get back to WWE but I’d lying if I said I never wanted to have a WrestleMania moment again, or I never wanted to wrestle at Madison Square Garden — of course I would.”
“If Triple H called me right now, if I had that 203 — that’s the area code for Stamford, Connecticut — of course I’d pick up. But right now I’m focusing on being the best me possible, and having the most fun possible, and making the most money possible.”
He previously won the Intercontinental Championship at Wrestlemania 32, but given his recent incredible run in the independent scene, he could be set for bigger things in WWE. His reinvention has helped him become a potential top star in the company and could follow the same trajectory that Cody Rhodes was on in WWE before his injury at Hell in a Cell 2022.
Meanwhile, according to WrestleVotes, WWE reportedly has “significant interest” in bringing back Chelsea Green into the mix. It’s likely if she were to come back it would to be a valet to her husband Matt Cardona, in a similar role that Scarlett Bordeaux has to her husband Karrion Kross.
She could also be utilised as a wrestle, potentially sending her down to NXT again to help their women’s division. This is a possibility but I would say it’s more likely she has a role on the main roster with her husband than anything else. WrestleVotes also think that if she were to be offered a new deal, it would be part of the main roster rather than an NXT contract.
Matt Cardona and Chelsea Green would be a huge signing for WWE and could help be part of a growing group of stars built in WWE since the retirement of Vince McMahon. While Triple H may not have been a fan of Zack Ryder during his initial spate of popularity in the 2010s, he will surely see the value in a man who loves WWE and has put in immense work during his time away from the company to make himself a main event star wherever he goes.
