Summerslam is known for it’s incredible matches and storytelling moments, but will be see any high Summerslam star ratings this year? Will Summerslam 2022 give us a 5 star match to look back at with awe?
WWE welcomes the fans to one of their new “Big 5” Pay Per Views for Summerslam 2022. The event has grown from it’s debut in 1988 to become the “biggest part of the summer” and is one of WWE’s longest running pay per views of all time.
The show features the top stars in WWE battling it out for Championships, title opportunities and grudge matches, where old scores will be settled and new lifelong rivalries will begin. The show was main evented by the historic showdown between Brock Lesnar and Roman Reign (for only the 8th time in their career) for the Unified WWE Universal Championship.
The show also featured some huge stars on the card. Youtube sensation Logan Paul took on the Miz in a blockbuster match after The Miz attacked Paul following their Wrestlemania bout against The Mysterios. Meanwhile, Rey and Dominik Mysterio faced off with Judgement Day (Finn Balor and Damian Priest), whilst the Tag Team Titles were on the line in The Usos vs Street Profits.
Summerslam has previously been home to some of the best matches of all time. In 2013, CM Punk lost a fantastic no-DQ match against Brock Lesnar that was a personal Summerslam five-star match. That same year, Daniel Bryan defeated John Cena for his first WWE Championship and started off his storyline toward the main event of Wrestlemania.
The year after, Brock Lesnar decimated John Cena to become the WWE Champion in a performance that made children openly weep in the arena. Elsewhere, in 1992 Bret Hart and Davey Boy Smith tore up Summerslam in Wembley Stadium in a fantastic Intercontinental Championship match, and at Summerslam 2001 Stone Cold Steve Austin took on Kurt Angle in a star-studded WWF Championship match.
With Vince McMahon retiring from the WWE in controversial circumstances, this years Summerslam had an air of positivity and hope about it. The wrestlers involved will have hoped to garner some high match ratings for Summerslam 2022 and will be looking towards Dave Meltzer for that coveted 5 star match rating at Summerslam.
Here in this article we will look at the matches that took place at Summer 2022 and see what match rating they were given. We will take their match rating from Cagematch.net, a wrestling match aggregation site where users vote on match ratings to give an average view of what the fans thought of the match.
We will also look at Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer’s star ratings. He famously rates matches out of five stars, but occasional breaks the match ratings and awards up to seven star matches. We will look at both his and Cagematch’s Summerslam 2022 star ratings and match ratings.
Here are the match ratings for WWE Summerslam 2022.
Pat McAfee vs. Happy Corbin
WWE commentator and former NFL star Pat McAfee stepped into the ring once again as he took on Happy Corbin at Summerslam 2022. He hadn’t wrestled since losing at Wrestlemania in Vince McMahon’s last match, but came in with all the confidence in the world against the former Mr Money In The Bank in Happy Corbin.
Loose ring ropes hurt this match greatly, causing some issues during sequences which exposed both men greatly. With McAfee’s lack of experience in the ring he was not able to compensate and despite him defeating Happy Corbin, the match did not get a great star rating due to the sloppiness in the ring and boring stretches during the match.
Summerslam Star Rating – 3 stars
Summerslam Match Rating – 5.67
Bobby Lashley vs Theory
Summerslam Star Rating –
Summerslam Match Rating – N/A
The Usos vs The Street Profits
In what feels for about the 14th time this year, The Usos defended their WWE Tag Team Championships against the Street Profits at Summerslam 2022.
While a decent match, that saw the champions retain their titles once again and forcing the Street Profits to eat another loss, it did not reach the highs of their previous encounter. Jeff Jarrett as the special guest referee added little to the match and it was a disappointment at the end of the day, based on how good these two teams can be
Summerslam Star Rating – 3.5 stars
Summerslam Match Rating – 6.66
Liv Morgan vs Ronda Rousey
After cashing in her Money in the Bank contract on Ronda Rousey on Monday Night Raw on July 4th, 2022, Liv Morgan won her first ever Smackdown Women’s Champion. She joined a very short list of women who can claim to have beaten Ronda Rousey, and she had the chance to double her win tally as she battled the former UFC star at Summerslam 2022.
In a match that didn’t even crack the 5 minute mark, Liv Morgan managed to do the impossible and defeat Ronda Rousey in a singles match once again. Due to the length of the match, it did not get a Summerslam 2022 Cagematch rating, just like Lashley vs Theory.
Summerslam Star Rating – 1
Summerslam Match Rating – N/A
The Mysterios vs Judgement Day
A returning Edge helped Rey and Dominik Mysterio defeat his former stable Judgement Day in a match at Summerslam 2022, although the match rating for this match is lower than the men involved in the match would have wanted.
Edge’s return garnered a huge pop from the WWE Universe and he hit both Finn Balor and Damian Priest with a pair of huge spears. However, the match was nothing special and some loose ropes caused some issues during the match for the high-flying Mysterios. It didn’t get a great Summerslam 2022 star rating but was a fun match to watch nonetheless.
Summerslam Star Rating – 3.5 stars
Summerslam Match Rating – 5.24
Bianca Belair vs Becky Lynch
In a rematch from both Summerslam 2021 and Wrestlemania 38, Becky Lynch vs Bianca Belair took place for the coveted Raw Women’s Championship. The pair were currently 1-1 in Pay Per View matches prior to Summerslam 2022, so the stakes were huge to see who would come out on top.
It opened the show and got the fans hot for the rest of the show. It was not on the level of their Wrestlemania match (although very few matches could be that good) but still a decent match that impressed fans and set them on their way to a great Summerslam 2022.
Summerslam Star Rating – 4 stars
Summerslam Match Rating – 8.27
Logan Paul vs The Miz
Logan Paul once again showed why he is one of the best celebrity wrestlers of all time as he took on The Miz in a huge match at Summerslam 2022. Both men put on their best efforts to put on a great show, in a match that included interference from Tommaso Ciamp, Maryse and AJ Styles.
Logan Paul picked up the shock win, hitting The Miz with his own move – The Skull Crushing Finale – and pinned him for the win, getting revenge for Wrestlemania this year. It may not get a five star rating from Dave Meltzer but the Summerslam bout entertained the fans greatly and that is all that matters.
Summerslam Star Rating – 4 stars
Summerslam Match Rating – 7.38
Roman Reigns vs Brock Lesnar
In one of the best matches between the pair’s many, many bouts, Roman Reigns once again was victorious over his longtime rival Brock Lesnar in a fun and exciting last man standing match.
Roman Reigns walked away with both of his World Championships – The WWE Championship and Universal Championship – and beat Brock Lesnar just as he did at Wrestlemania earlier this year.
This match however was much more exciting and the fans were much more into the Last Man Standing match. The highlight being Brock Lesnar driving a tractor to the ring, before flipping the actual ring over and sending Reigns flying into the air in a manner never seen before on television. This got a huge cagematch rating and will do well on the Dave Meltzer star rating for Summerslam 2022
Summerslam Star Rating – 4.5 stars
