Umaga wrestled his last WWE match against CM Punk, just days before being fired from the company.
With news of Umaga’s son finally entering the wrestling business, we look back at the final WWE match of the legendary Umaga.
From his debut to his final bout, few wrestlers have terrified the WWE audience as much as the Samoan Bulldozer. He is one of the greatest monsters in WWE history and worthy of a spot in the WWE Hall of Fame one day.
Keep reading this article to find out what Umaga’s last match in WWE was and what happened to him after he was fired by the company.
Umaga’s Last WWE Match
Umaga’s last match in his WWE career was in a Samoan Strap match against CM Punk at Extreme Rules 2009.
Umaga had been drafted to Smackdown the year prior after spending the bulk of his career on Raw. He almost immediately suffered a PCL tear which took him out for a number of months. When Umaga finally returned, he began his last feud in the WWE by challenging Mr Money In The Bank CM Punk.
Umaga attacked CM Punk on multiple occasions, thwarting his attempts to cash in his Money In The Bank contract to win the World Heavyweight Championship. This started a rivalry between the two, which came to a head at Extreme Rules 2009.
Umaga’s last match was a Samoan Strap match. The strap match has taken many names over the years – from the Samoan Strap, to the Texas Bullrope and to the Russian Chain – but the rules have always remained the same.
The two wrestled are connected by a strap to their wrists. They cannot go more than the length of the strap away from one another, stopping the heel from running away from the fight.
The match is not won by pin fall – instead, a competitor has to incapacitate their opponent so much that they are able to touch all four corners of the ring uninterrupted.
The final match of Umaga’s WWE career was the Samoan Strap match against CM Punk.
They battled at Extreme Rules 2009, with Umaga the dominant beast that he always had been. However, CM Punk managed to take the victory, hitting the GTS to knock out Umaga before touching all four posts for the victory.
The bout saw the strap used as a weapon. Both men used it to choke and whip each other, to inflict as much damage as humanly possible.
Despite the “Samoan” part indicating an advantage on Umaga’s part, he lost the match and left the WWE soon after. At the end of the show, CM Punk cashed in his Money in the Bank contract and won the World Heavyweight Championship from Jeff Hardy.
Umaga Left The WWE In June 2009
Umaga was fired by the WWE in June 2009 after breaking the wellness policy for the second time. As per the rules, he was required to visit rehab for treatment to help curb his drug addiction. Umaga refused and was promptly fired by the WWE after many years with the company.
He would soon move onto the independent scene. Under the name Uso Fatu, he would sign up for the Hulk Hogan Hulkamania Tour of Australia in 2009. On the tour he would wrestle a number of matches, including defeating WWE legend Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake.
Umaga’s last match before his death was against Mr Anderson on the Hulk Hogan Hulkamania tour, in Sydney, Australia. Just one week after that match, Umaga was found in his home unresponsive and with blood coming from his nose. He was rushed to hospital, but died later that day after multiple heart attacks. He was only 36 years old.
