AEW Grand Slam 2023 took place on September 20th, 2023 at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in the Queens borough of New York City.
It is the third consecutive year AEW have ran Grand Slam, with the first holding Bryan Danielson’s debut match in AEW (against Kenny Omega), as well as CM Punk’s first TV match in over seven years.
The event is shot similar to other AEW Pay Per View events, but is shown as part of their television show. The event is broadcast on AEW Dynamite and AEW Rampage.
This year’s AEW Grand Slam had some huge matches on it, including a double championship match between two hated enemies, finally facing off after a decade-long grudge.

Eddie Kingston vs Claudio Castagnoli
In a rematch from ROH Supercard of Honor 2023, Eddie Kingston and Claudio Castagnoli put both their championships on the line in a huge grudge match at AEW Grand Slam.
This match was a title vs title match, with Kingston’s NJPW Strong Openweight Championship and Castagnoli’s ROH World Championship on the line in this electric bout.
The crowd were electric for the whole match, as big suplexes and hard-hitting chops helped make this match one of the best ROH title defenses of all time.
After a fantastic match, Eddie Kingston managed to pin Claudio Castagnoli to win the ROH World Championship, hitting a powerbomb to win the belt for the first time in his career.

Sammy Guevara vs Chris Jericho
Le Sex Gods finally collided in AEW, nearly four years after first teaming up as The Inner Circle on the first ever episode of AEW Dynamite.
It was quite a slow match, similar to the structure of Jericho’s bout with Will Ospreay at All In – although Guevara is not the talent Ospreay is.
The bout was as good of a match as you’d expect out of Jericho at his age, although the finish (a shooting star press into a Code Breaker) was worth the price of admission alone.

Jon Moxley vs Rey Fenix
A major injury to Jon Moxley put a dampener on what should have been a classic match for the AEW International Championship.
Just a few weeks after he won the title from Orange Cassidy and All Out, Moxley dropped the title to Rey Fenix at AEW Grand Slam 2023.
Fenix came out of the gates with a point to prove, attacking Moxley on the ramp and continuing his assault at ringside. Once they got into the ring, both men looked a little rough, botching a number of moves and failing to hit their usual signature offense.
The ending of the match was awful. Referee Rick Knox completely botched a three-count after a Black Fire Driver by Fenix, which caused a fairly-serious concussion to Jon Moxley.

Saraya vs Toni Storm
After winning a four-way match, also including Britt Baker, Hikaru Shida and Nyla Rose, Toni Storm booked her ticket to a title match at Grand Slam 2023.
Here, she faced off against her Outcasts (not the rap group) partner Saraya, in a huge battle for the AEW Women’s Championship.
It was a good match, with the crowd firmly behind Toni Storm and her new “Golden Age of Hollywood” gimmick.
Sadly, she could not get the job done. Despite having a number of shoes at her disposal, interference from Ruby Soho gave Saraya the win in her first AEW World Champion defense.

MJF vs Samoa Joe
MJF continued his reign as the greatest babyface in world (well…) by beating Samoa Joe in the main event of AEW Grand Slam 2023.
With the help of Adam Cole, he led the crowd into a chorus of cheers as he forced Samoe Joe to tap out to a sleeper hold (albeit with the help of tape to choke him out).
MJF did his best to keep the crowd hot throughout the match, including getting a standing ovation after hitting his patented Kangaroo Kick, in one of the best matches of the night.
