As it appears to be less and less likely that The Rock will be wrestling at WrestleMania 39, although John Cena now seems certain to appear at the event with a brand-new opponent.

The 16-time World Champion only wrestled once in 2022, a tag team right at the end of the year keeping his streak of wrestling every year since his debut alive. He could carry on his record of 22 straight years if the teased match with Austin Theory happens at Wrestlemania 39,as teased by the WWE

John Cena vs Austin Theory

WWE seem to have confirmed Austin Theory will wrestle John Cena at Wrestlemania 39, with footage of the duo fighting was heavily featured in the WWE 2K23 trailer.

The two men have never faced off before in a wrestling ring, but Theory has been vocal about wanting to face the man he grew up watching as a fan of the WWE at Cena’s peak. There have long been comparison’s drawn between the two, with Theory hoping to utilise his potential to achieve the same success John Cena has, but the comparison does not end there.

On a recent Raw episode, Theory opened his promo by using Cena signature, “The Champ is here!”. This was a clear reference to the sixteen time WWE Champion, who Austin Theory has noted wanting to fight multiple times. The pair have also interacted on social media before which has only helped build hype to a potential match between them.

WWE 2K23 was recently announced, with John Cena revealed as the cover star and focus of this years 2K Showcase mode. He was heavily featured in the trailer released this week, playing on the joke that he invisible, based on his “You Can’t See Me” catchphrase.

The trailer also starred Austin Theory, but the pair’s interaction was not the interesting part. Cena was playing a copy of the game in the video, which featured clips of John Cena vs Austin Theory in the game. This could be hinting at WWE including Theory vs Cena at Wrestlemania 39 in the showcase mode as a sneak peak of what is to come at this year’s Wrestlemania.

WWE have previously used the game to introduce new talents and to tease fantasy match-ups in the game and real life. Sting, The Ultimate Warrior and Goldberg were all announced as stars of the game before their returns/debuts in the company, although this would be the first time WWE blatantly spoiled a Wrestlemania match, albeit one that has been teased all year, in the trailer of a video game.
