With a recent report from Fightful Select claiming that the AEW contracts of FTR (Cash Wheeler and Dax Harwood) is expiring this summer, the rumours of FTR leaving AEW to sing for WWE have become more and more prominent.
With recent reports of AEW talent being more willing to sign for WWE after Cody Rhodes jump from AEW to WWE, FTR returning to WWE has seemed more and more likely by the day. Couple with their fellow Pinnacle leader MJF leaving AEW after his contract ends, everything us up in the air as to where AEW’s top tag team will end up this year.
FTR Leaving AEW
FTR could be leaving AEW once their contracts expire this year. The duo signed for the company after their WWE release in 2020 and have been one of the most successful teams in the world since then.
They are former AEW Tag Team Champions and also currently hold the ROH and AAA tag team championships. While they have been hyper successful in all their endeavours and are currently in a Bret Hart-inspired trio with CM Punk in AEW.
While conflicting reports state that their contract is over in either 2022 or 2023, there has been talk of WWE having an interest in seeing FTR returning to the company. FTR leaving AEW would be a huge loss for the promotion and would negate three years of helping build FTR into one of the most popular tag teams across the globe.
According to Fightful Select, WWE officials have expressed internal interest about bringing back the tag team. The duo were known as The Revival in WWE and were multi-time tag team champions in the promotion, although due to disrespect to themselves and tag team wrestling led to them wanting (and succeeding) to get their release from their WWE deals in 2020.
While FTR have spoken numerous times about leaving AEW, including claiming they were retiring, breaking up or simply not wrestling for AEW, they have been resolute in performing their best every night in AEW.
Now they have turned face in AEW, the talk of them leaving is non-existent. They look to be challenging for the IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Championships at Forbidden Door and add to their increasingly impressive arsenal of title belts and look to mimic Kenny Omega’s belt collector gimmick in the tag team division in AEW.
It would be a sad sight to see FTR leave AEW to go back to WWE, given with how miserable they were in WWE. They look much happier wrestling for Tony Khan and can showcase the art of tag team wrestling to their hearts content under the AEW or ROH banner.
Long may they continue, and f— the Revival.
