UPDATE: Drew McIntyre defeated Sheamus on Smackdown to earn himself a shot at Roman Reigns (or Brock Lesnar) at WWE Clash at the Castle for the Unified WWE Universal Championship.
Although rumours of a Drew McIntyre vs Tyson Fury match at WWE Clash at the Castle, current signs point toward a Roman Reigns vs Drew McIntyre world championship bout in the Cardiff-based wrestling event.
The main event of Backlash saw Drew McIntyre team with RK-Bro (Randy Orton and Matt Riddle) to take on the double champion Roman Reigns and his cousins Jimmy and Jey Uso. The match saw The Bloodline win by pinning Matt Riddle, but has fans excited for a potential world title match of Roman Reigns vs Drew McIntyre.
While McIntyre’s team suffered defeat at the hands of Roman Reigns and his family, it was not the Scottish Psychopath who was pinned by The Big Dog in the match. He has not been defeated by Reigns in recent times and looks to be the best option to take the belt (or belts) off Roman Reigns.
Meanwhile, Roman Reigns has look a dominant force, especially since defeating Brock Lesnar at Wrestlemania 38 for the WWE Championship. The win made it so Roman Reigns now holds both the WWE Championship and Universal Championship, the latter of which he will have held for a full two years by the time WWE Clash at the Castle comes around in September.
But will Roman Reigns vs Drew McIntyre face off at Clash at the Castle?
Roman Reigns vs Drew McIntyre
The main event of Clash at the Castle is rumoured to be Drew McIntyre vs Roman Reigns, with fans expecting the match to be for one or both of Roman’s world championships.
The poster for the event has recently been revealed, and showcases both Roman Reigns and Drew McIntyre as the two biggest names at the event, as they dominate the space also occupied by the likes of Becky Lynch and Edge.
On the poster above, Drew McIntyre dominates the left of the poster, holding his famous sword featuring the reflections of five WWE superstars (top to bottom – Seth Rollins, Bianca Belair, Edge, Cody Rhodes and Becky Lynch).
Meanwhile, Roman Reigns is front and centre, cutting his trademark pose that he uses in the ring before hitting his signature Superman Punch. Having both men so focused on the poster has fans theorising they will be facing off.
Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer claimed that WWE is planning for Roman Reigns vs Drew McIntyre at Clash at the Castle.
The working idea is Reigns vs. McIntyre on 9/3 in Cardiff.

With it being the first British pay per view in 30 years, putting a British wrestler in Drew McIntyre in the main event seems a no-brainer. In the last big show in the UK (Summerslam 1992), Lancashire wrestler British Bulldog defeated Bret Hart for the Intercontinental Championship to a huge pop at Wembley, and WWE will hope for a similar feeling when they come to Cardiff in September.
Whether McIntyre will defeat Roman Reigns or not is another question, but it seems ever likely that the main event of Clash at the Castle will be Roman Reigns vs Drew McIntyre.
