John Cena’s Last Match Was A Sad End For The 16-Time WWE Champion

Who do you think will be the opponent in John Cena’s last match?

When we finally see John Cena’s last match, it will be a sad day in wrestling. Since his WWE debut in June 2002, John Cena has been the biggest star in WWE and an incredible ambassador for the WWE brand.

Over his illustrious career, John Cena picked up 16 world championships, tying WWE’s record with one of the all time greats, going level with The Nature Boy Ric Flair. With his career winding down, it seems unlikely that John Cena will surpass the two-time hall of famer, but you can never say never with somebody as talented or determined as John Cena.

It is currently unknown whether John Cena is retired or not, although the 16 time champion has hinted at John Cena’s retirement in recent interviews. Although he is 45 and currently pursuing an acting career in Hollywood, you never know when John Cena will pop up for one last match to wow the WWE audience again.

John Cena’s last match

john cena's last match wrestlemania

John Cena’s last match came at Summerslam 2021 when he faced Roman Reigns for the Universal Championship. The former WWE Champion main evented the show in his big return to the ring, in his first match back since Wrestlemania 36.

Sadly, the 16 time world champion could not match up the “Tribal Chief” and was defeated by Roman Reigns in a great last match for John Cena. Whether this match was John Cena’s retirement match had yet to be confirmed, but Cena seems to be focusing more on his acting career rather than wrestling for WWE at the moment.

The match against Roman Reigns was over 500 days after John Cena’s last pay-per-view match. That match was his “Firefly Funhouse” match against Bray Wyatt at Wrestlemania 36. The match was a cinematic match, in which Wyatt took Cena throughout different stages of his career, mentally dissecting the former Champion in one of the most memorable matches in Wrestlemania history

However, the match against Roman Reigns at Summerslam 2021 was John Cena’s last match to be televised by WWE.

John Cena wrestled one more time after this match for WWE, but it was a non-televised match. After the 10th September 2021 episode of Friday Night Smackdown, John Cena teamed with Rey Mysterio and Dominik Mysterio to take on the team of Roman Reigns, Jimmy Uso and Jey Uso. John Cena and the Mysterios were victorious in that match, which so was was John Cena’s last match.

UPDATE : John Cena has returned to WWE for one more match on the 30th November 2022 episode of Friday Night Smackdown – he is teaming with Kevin Owens to take on Sami Zayn and Roman Reigns.

Who will retire John Cena?

If his match against Roman Reigns was not John Cena’s last match, the question begs – who will retire John Cena?

The 16 time world champ has had many foes over his 20 year career in WWE. A match against Randy Orton could be the ultimate retirement match for John Cena, after the battles the pair had over the WWE Championship between 2007 and 2014.

Kevin Owens was recently trusted with having Steve Austin’s last match in WWE, so could be a good opponent for John Cena’s last match. Owens debuted on the main roster by defeating John Cena at Elimination Chamber 2015, and could come full circle by beating him again.

Long time rival Edge would be a good choice to retire John Cena, although with his age creeping up and history of neck injuries, giving the rub to Edge may not be the best idea.
