Jon Moxley has signed a new five year contract with AEW, according to reports.
The tthree time AEW Champion has been the biggest star in the promotion since its inception so Tony Khan will be delighted to lock him down to a deal, especially with stars like Malakai Black and Andrade El Idolo allegedly wanting to return to WWE.
The news was announced Friday via a press release issued by AEW, which noted that Moxley’s responsibilities with AEW will be expanding “to include mentoring and coaching talent.”
The press release also noted that he would be signing “exclusively” for AEW. While it does mention he will still be able to wrestle for their partners like NJPW, whether he can wrestle for independent promotions like GCW remains to be seen.
“This ensures that one of professional wrestling’s top stars will remain in All Elite Wrestling through 2027, while expanding his responsibilities to include mentoring and coaching talent. Moving forward, Moxley will work exclusively for AEW and its international partners, including New Japan Pro Wrestling, where he is a two-time IWGP United States Heavyweight Champion.” the official AEW press release reads
AEW this year have begun locking down it’s premier talents to new contracts with many of the original AEW stars deals set to expire this year. The three year deals they signed in 2019 come to an end in 2022 and they will be keen not to lose anyone else after Cody Rhodes jumped to WWE this year.
AEW has moved to lock down a number of talents who made their debut at AEW Double or Nothing 2019. Wrestlers like Kenny Omega, The Young Bucks and Jim Ross have signed new deals with the company in recent months, with Chris Jericho also rumoured to be penning a new deal with AEW.
Jon Moxley is another name who is said to have signed a new AEW contract. The former WWE Champion debuted at the end of Double or Nothing 2019, attacking both Jericho and Omega. He made an instant impact and became a top star in the company overnight.
He became the AEW Champion in 2020 and held it right through until November that year until he was beaten by Kenny Omega. He has since come back and had the best run of his life while also battling alcoholism.
He is now part of the Blackpool Combat Club with Bryan Danielson and Wheeler Yuta. With news of a new Jon Moxley AEW contract adding more years and, hopefully for him, more zeros to his deal, we will get to keep seeing the best of Jon Moxley in AEW and NJPW for a long, long time.
Dave Meltzer spoke about Jon Moxley’s AEW contract on Wrestling Observer Radio and revealed he probably signed a new deal with AEW as his three year deal would be up by no if he had not.
“We’re right at the time where the people who were signed prior to the first show [Double Or Nothing] because the first round of people were the people who were signed on the first week of the year, January 1st essentially, Young Bucks and Kenny Omega was like February actually. Jericho, Cody Rhodes, and all that. They were due at the top of the year.
[Bryan] Danielson and Kazarian…Scorpio Sky was early also. Moxley would probably be one of those guys if he signed a three-year deal. The three years would be up. I don’t know the deals as far as if he has an option or whatever like that. All the people who would’ve debuted at that first show in Vegas that signed three-year deals, and JR would’ve been one of those people where he debuted on that show their deals are coming up now.”
