AEW star Colt Cabana’s AEW contract has expired and he was set to be released by Tony Khan following nearly three year with the company. He has not been a focus on TV with the Dark Order from some months, with the rumoured issues with CM Punk expected to be the reason for the sudden disappearance.
According to Fightful Select, Colt Cabana is “almost never” at AEW Dynamite or AEW Rampage, and hasn’t been booked to wrestle in a match for quite some time. This was expected to be, by many backstage talents, to be due to his now toxic relationship with CM Punk, although nobody could confirm whether that was the real reason or not.
In a recent report about Colt Cabana’s AEW contract, Fightful Select wrote;
“We’re told by numerous AEW talent that they caught wind several months ago that there was word that Colt Cabana’s deal with the company was not being renewed.”
“Cabana is an extremely popular person backstage both from his work in AEW and outside, and we’ve heard that numerous talent voiced their displeasure and went to bat for Cabana. Since then, he’d ended up working the ROH Supercard event.”
Colt Cabana will likely be moved to the Ring of Honor roster once the company starts booking shows regularly again. He is an “extremely popular person backstage” in AEW and has been a long-time friend to many of the top stars, such as the Young Bucks, for many years now.
Colt Cabana has wrestled for ROH for years prior to joining AEW. He is a former ROH Tag Team Champion, alongside former partner CM Punk, and is also a former NWA World Heavyweight Champion.
Most of the big stars in wrestling today appeared on his podcast Art of Wrestling. It was one of the first wrestling podcasts to go viral and was an innovative invention that helped inspire many others, like Talk is Jericho and The Steve Austin Show podcast.
Colt Cabana was brought in to be part of the Dark Order in AEW, although the group has not been featured on TV much recently. They have also suffered two releases in their ranks so far, with Alan Angels and Stu Grayson being some of the latest AEW releases from the company.
It is currently unknown how long a contract Colt Cabana currently has with AEW or ROH. As both promotions are owned by Tony Khan, the contract situation is likely to work across brands and stars of both promotions share the same contract.
