Rey Mysterio paid tribute to a fellow WWE Hall of Famer at WrestleMania 39, as he faced off with his own son in a huge marquee match.

The former WWE Champion took on Dominik Mysterio in one of the most heated matches on the show. This was one of the best father vs son matches in WWE history, and wowed the crowd with some incredible action.

Rey Mysterio won the match, with some help from Bad Bunny, but it was his attire that drew the eyes of the fans.

The Lucha Libre legend wore a mask that paid tribute to Japanese wrestling legend The Great Muta, who was also inducted in the 2023 WWE Hall of Fame, alongside Rey Mysterio.

Speaking at the post-WrestleMania 39 press conference, Mysterio told journalists that the mask has been in the works for the past six years.

However, he had not pulled the trigger until this year, where he wanted to pay tribute, not just to The Great Muta, but to Hollywood as a whole.

He credits his mask maker as the man behind the Marvel Superhero Hollywood movies, showing just how important Rey Mysterio takes his masks.

“Six years ago, this mask has been in the projects. The creator of this mask is the creator of Hollywood, the Marvel Universe. That’s how deep it went. WrestleMania goes Hollywood, it was the perfect time. We didn’t go superhero, we went Hollywood style this year. I was very happy with the outcome.

On top of that, we had a mixture of the mask being made by a good friend of ours, Darnell, who works for the Marvel Universe, and (Masahiro) Hayashi, my creator since 1996, who made the tights, the vest, and everything else. I’m very happy with the outcome of the outfit tonight. I hope the fans loved it as much as I did,”

Triple H recently spoke to journalists about Rey Mysterio, stating that he “put Lucha on the map!”.
