Who Are Aussie Open? AEW’s New Tag Team Revealed

It’s official: Aussie Open is All Elite! Following his match against Orange Cassidy for the AEW International Championship on Wednesday’s episode of “Dynamite”, Tony Khan revealed that Kyle Fletcher and Mark Davis are signed to the company!

This came as a shock to many, for two reason. They are currently signed to NJPW, recently holding the IWGP Heavyweight Tag Team Titles.

The other reason being that Mark Davis is currently injured, which was the reason why Aussie Open dropped the titles in the first place.

Who Are Aussie Open In AEW?

Aussie Open are an Australian tag team who recently signed to All Elite Wrestling. The duo previously wrestled for New Japan Pro Wrestling, as part of the United Empire faction.

The pair formed their team in 2017, when they both met while wrestling in the UK. Their first time teaming together was in WCPW, where they went under the name “Aussie Assault”.

After a while, they changed their name to Aussie Open, and began wrestling all across the UK and Europe.

The name “Aussie Open” may be the reference to the Australian Open tennis grand slam, although neither member has confirmed or denied this. The event is informally referred to as “The Aussie Open”.

The duo then began to work for RevPro, which gave them the opportunity to work in Japan, as New Japan Pro Wrestling had a talent agreement with the English company.

Aussie Open debuted in New Japan Pro Wrestling in 2019, although their run was cut short by the pandemic the following year.

In the UK, they joined Will Ospreay’s United Empire faction in 2020, along with other NJPW stars like Jeff Cobb and The Great-O-Khan. It was with Ospreay where they found most success, accompanying him in multiple main event matches.

They became tag team champions in New Japan twice. At Sakura Genesis on April 8th, 2022 at the event, Aussie Open defeated Bishamon to win their first IWGP Tag Team Championship, adding to the NJPW Strong tag titles they also won that year.

The pair also wrestled alongside Will Ospreay (as United Empire) in the AEW Trios Championship tournament. They beat Death Triangle before losing to The Elite in the semi-finals.

Mark Davis suffered an injury in May 2023, forcing them to vacate their two titles. However, AEW boss Tony Khan paid for his surgery to help heal the injury, and the pair signed contracts with the company shortly after.

Aussie Open were announced as being “All Elite” after the 24th May 2023 episode of AEW Dynamite. Kyle Fletcher lost a match to Orange Cassidy for the AEW International Championship on the show, and entered a battle royal at Double or Nothing for a chance at the title.

It looks as though Fletcher will be going solo in AEW, until Mark Davis returns from injury. Once that happens, Aussie Open will make their way to the top of the tag division once again, and will have AEW Tag Team Champions FTR in their sights.
