On this day in Wrestling on April 2, 2020 Brock Lesnar returns to WWE after a 8 year hiatus from wrestling. Brock Lesnar returned to attack John Cena on the Raw after Wrestlemania 28, where John Cena had lost to The Rock in the first of two “Once in a Lifetime” matches.
The Beast left WWE in 2004, wrestling in NJPW and winning the IWGP Heavyweight Championship, before retiring from the sport. He tried out for the NFL, getting cut in the last round of cuts for the Minnesota Vikings and almost playing in the NFL.
After he narrowly missed out on the NFL, Brock Lesnar joined the UFC, becoming one of the biggest stars in the company and becoming a main event MMA fighter. He lost his first fight in the UFC to Frank Mir, before winning his second fight by judges decision against Heath Herring.
Brock Lesnar returned to the UFC to fight UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture. In a shock victory, he defeated the legendary UFC Fighter by technical knockout, winning his first and only UFC Heavyweight Championship. This made him the first, and only, man to win both the WWE and UFC Heavyweight Championships in his career.
Brock Lesnar returned to WWE in 2012 after diverticulitis ended his UFC career. He made his return on the Raw after Wrestlemania 28, with fans already chanting his name before he had even been revealed. His return had been leaked online, and he was expected to return to WWE after Wrestlemania. The fans popped huge when his music hit for the first time since Wrestlemania 20, and Brock Lesnar appeared on Raw.
He would face John Cena at Extreme Rules 2012, losing to the former WWE Champion in a fantastic match. The match was excellent, but the loss was perplexing. Brock Lesnar returns, and you decide to beat him in his first match back? After winning the UFC Heavyweight Championship.
To make matters worse, Cena completely no-sold the beating he had just received, cutting a promo to the crowd after the match, then appearing on Raw the next night completely unscathed. Luckily, Brock Lesnar is a freak of nature and one of the best of all time so the loss didn’t hurt him much, but it was a strange decision to have such an unstoppable beast lose in his first match.
Brock Lesnar has since gone on to win multiple World Champions since his return to WWE, and has even achieved something even greater. At Wrestlemania 30, he defeated the Undertaker to end the incredible 21-0 streak of wins at Wrestlemania. He was the first man to beat the Undertaker at Wrestlemania, and that match was one of the most shocking matches in the history of wrestling.
