A WWE Hall of Famer has spoken out about a potential “Stone Cold” Steve Austin vs Roman Reigns match, claiming that it would be a “bad idea” to book the WWE Hall of Famer against the Tribal Chief, who has held the world title for nearly two years.
Roman Reigns vs Steve Austin could be a huge Wrestlemania main event in 2023. The Rock has long been rumoured to face his cousin Reigns, ever since the pair appeared together at the 2015. He made a surprise run in to help Reigns eliminate Big Show and Kane and win the match, before going on to Wrestlemania 31 to face Brock Lesnar.
However, since then The Rock and Roman Reigns have been kept separate. The Rock wrestled a 5 second match at Wrestlemania 32, but has not wrestled a real match since his bout with John Cena at Wrestlemania 29. Injuries suffered in the Cena matches have forced insurance companies to stop him wrestling while filming movies, although he could make an exception if he really wanted to.
A suitable replacement for the inter-family match would be The Rock’s long-time rival, Stone Cold Steve Austin. The WWE Hall of Famer is rumoured to be coming out of retirement once again at Wrestlemania 39, a year after he wrestled Kevin Owens at Wrestlemania in 2022.
It has been rumoured that Steve Austin could wrestle at the 2023 Royal Rumble and he would be an instant favourite for the match if he was included in the titular battle royal. A record fourth victory would set up a match with Roman Reigns at Wrestlemania, which would be as star-studded a match as could be possible in the WWE.
However, one fellow WWE Hall of Famer thinks booking Roman Reigns vs Steve Austin for the Unified WWE Universal Championship would be a bad idea for Triple H. Speaking on his podcast “Hall of Fame“, six-time World Champion Booker T said WWE should not book the two icons against each other, as it was “pretty hard” for Austin to step into the ring anymore, and “getting in the ring with Roman would not be a good idea”.
“I think Steve’s role could be a little bit bigger, you know, then being in the rumble because we all know what the rumble is leading to. I don’t think we want to put Steve Austin in a match like that knowing where it would lead to, which is him getting tossed out because he’s not going to win it. I don’t think that works. For Steve Austin to get up off the sofa at this age he is right now is pretty hard. Getting in the ring with Roman [Reigns] would not be a good idea.”
