The Rock on Mick Foley WWE Championship Win, “Loudest Crowd Eruption” ever

It has been 23 years since Mick Foley shocked the world and defeated The Rock to win the WWE Championship.

Well, I say shocked the world. The match was actually pre-taped, and Tony Schiavone famously spoiled the result of the match live on WCW Monday Nitro. This was a huge blunder, as millions of fans immediately turned the channel to see fan-favourite Mick Foley pin the Rock to win his first ever WWE Championship.

Whilst the actual match took place 23 years ago, it was aired on tape delay on the 4th of January 1999. It was one of the biggest moments in wrestling history and a turning point in the war between WWE and WCW.

The Rock, as in touch with his wrestling past as ever, paid respect to Mick Foley and Steve Austin as he remarked on that fateful night 23 years ago.

The Rock, real name Dwayne Johnson, wrote “Love this. This was one of the loudest crowd eruptions I’ve ever experienced in my career in the wild world of pro wrestling. The fans JUST KNEW. And my buddy @steveaustinBSR knew how to swing a steel chair just right to not split my head open. What a night #mividaloca””.

Rumours have been flying around in recent years whether The Rock will return to the ring. Some fans are sure that he will return for a Roman Reigns vs The Rock Wrestlemania main event. However others are sure that he went out in his final match at Wrestlemania 32 against Erick Rowan.

Is the Rock Retired?
