Former WWE wrestler Butch Reed was originally planned to win the WWE Intercontinental Championship during his run in the company, former manager Slick has revealed.
Butch Reed wrestled in many high-profile matches during his run in the company between 1986 and 1988, teaming with Andre The Giant at the first Survivor Series event against Hulk Hogan‘s team.
He never won any championships in the WWE, but Slick has revealed that Vince McMahon planned for Butch Reed to win the Intercontinental Championship.
Speaking on the “Stories with Brisco and Bradshaw” podcast, Slick revealed plans for Reed to win the title, but noted how he kept no-showing events which caused the company to lose faith in him as a chapion.
“They bought Butch in to mimic Hogan and dye his hair blonde and he was supposed to become Intercontinental Champion. That’s what they brought him up there for. He started missing shows and then they lost confidence in him and that was the end of that.”
Butch Reed passed away in 2021, at the age of just 66. He suffered two heart attacks in January, as a result of a battle with the COVID-19 virus, passing away a month later.
