Rey Mysterio vs Dominik Mysterio Is Second Father Vs Son Match At WrestleMania

It’s official – Rey Mysterio will fight his son Dominik Mysterio in a huge match at WrestleMania 39.

The bout is months in the making. The pair were tag team champions together, but split after Dominik turned on his father at Clash at the Castle, joining up with Finn Balor’s Judgement Day.

Rey Mysterio refused to fight his son for months following the attack, even transferring over to Smackdown to avoid fighting against him.

However, after an attack cost him a victory over LA Knight, Rey finally snapped and accepted Dominik’s challenge for WrestleMania.

While you may think this is the first Father vs Son match at WrestleMania, you’d be surprised to learn that it is not the case. Vince McMahon wrestled Shane McMahon at WrestleMania X7, which we’ll go through later in this article.

Rey Mysterio vs Dominik Mysterio

Rey Mysterio vs Dominik is a match with a 6 month long build up. It began at Clash at the Castle and will likely culminate at WrestleMania 39.

The match was confirmed this week on Smackdown, where Mysterio finally had enough and hit Dom. This was lauded by CM Punk on Twitter, who claimed he wanted to hit him for 13 years – harkening back to his feud with Mysterio in WWE.

This match is rumoured to be the last match in Rey Mysterio’s career. Since being announced as the newest inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, fans have theorised that he could be retiring from wrestling after facing his son.

This leads us to believe that the winner of Dominik vs Rey Mysterio will in fact be the younger Mysterio.

He took his father’s mask during the Royal Rumble match in 2023, attacking his father and stopping him from entering the match. This could imply that this match could be a Luchas de Apuestas, with Rey putting his mask on the line against Dominik’s hair.

WrestleMania 39

The match at WrestleMania 39 was an intense yet emotional affair.

Dominic Mysterio entered in a police van, with his hands cuffed and surrounded by officers. He also wore the mask he stole from his father at the 2023 Royal Rumble, trying to get into the head of the recently minted WWE Hall of Famer.

Meanwhile, Rey Mysterio paid homage to the late Eddie Guerrero with his entrance. He entered in a low rider, driven by Snoop Dogg, as Viva La Raza blared around the Los Angeles Arena.

The match being sponsored by Cinnamon Toast Crunch sort of took away from the spectacle, but Rey Mysterio managed to bring the crowd back by whipping him with his belt.

Meanwhile, Dominik threw a drink into his sisters face, before bouncing his dad’s father off the ring post. Dom was the ultimate heel, and you can’t help but love to hate him.

Dominik got the upper hand, and continued to antagonise his family. They had enough, and Angie (his mum) slapped him, before she stole a kiss from Rey Mysterio.

Dominic soon called upon the help of Judgement Day to aid him at ringside, stopping Rey Mysterio from winning the bout.

However, he was not alone. The recently re-formed LWO entered the fray, attacking Judgement Day and evening the odds for the Dominik vs Rey Mysterio match.

It looked like the son picked up the win, after hitting his dad with a 619 and Frog Splash, yet somehow Rey kicked out.

Dominik then tried to hit Rey Mysterio with a chain, but was thwarted by Bad Bunny as he was hit by a 619 and Frog Splash.

Rey Mysterio vs Dominik Mysterio ended when the father pinned the son, to win the first father-son match at WrestleMania for over twenty years.

However, this was only the second time a father had wrestled his son at a WrestleMania event…

Vince McMahon vs Shane McMahon at WrestleMania X7

While there had been fathers appearing with sons at WrestleMania prior to this match (Bruno Sammartino managing his son David at WrestleMania 1 springs to mind), we had never seen a match between the pair on the biggest stage in WWE.

The bout came at the mid point of a feud between father and son. Shane McMahon had just completed the purchase of WCW, going over his father’s head to keep the Monday Night Wars going.

The pair wrestled in a hardcore match at WrestleMania X7 – rated as the best WrestleMania of all time – in what turned out to be one of the best matches of all time.

Including both Stephanie and Linda McMahon, it had all the trappings of a fantastic family drama. Ironically, the pop of the night didn’t come from the wrestling, but from Linda standing up from her wheelchair (she had been drugged by Vince so he could have sex with Trish Stratus) and kicking her husband square in the testicles.

Mick Foley was also on hand, being the special guest referee for the bout. He called it right down the middle, until he was attacked by Vince. Then, he locked in the Mr Socko submission move, and helped Shane McMahon win the match against his father.

This is, by far, the best father-son match of all time (so far). Vince also wrestled Stephanie McMahon a week before he wedding in a hardcore match, although that is not as widely received as this one.
