Kenny Omega is currently out injured in AEW, suffering multiple injuries including suffering from Vertigo in the ring. The former AEW Champion wrestled his last AEW match in November 2021, when he was defeated by Adam Page in a match where he lost his AEW Championship.
Before he became one of AEW’s biggest stars, Kenny Omega wrestled in Japan for New Japan Pro Wrestling. In NJPW, he earned a reputation as the Best Bout Machine, putting on blockbuster matches at every event he wrestled against, against opponents like Kazuchika Okada, Hiroshi Tanahashi and Kota Ibushi.
Hi left NJPW under a cloud, as the NJPW president behind the scenes held a grudge against Omega. He reportedly offered him a lower contract than he previously had, despite spending the year as IWGP Heavyweight Champion and main eventing Wrestle Kingdom 13. This angered Omega, who chose AEW over WWE after negotiations with NJPW ground to a halt.
The relationship between AEW and NJPW has since been mended, with multiple NJPW stars wrestling in AEW since the end of the pandemic. However, it is unknown if Kenny Omega will wrestle again for NJPW, or if he does, whether it will live to Kenny Omega’s last NJPW match against Hiroshi Tanahashi at the Tokyo Dome.
Kenny Omega’s last NJPW match
Kenny Omega’s last match in NJPW was the main event of Wrestle Kingdom 13 on January 4 2019. He faced NJPW legend and Ace of the Universe Hiroshi Tanahashi, with the G1 Climax winner facing Kenny Omega for the Canadian’s IWGP Heavyweight Championship.
Omega was set to leave NJPW just days after the event, and was to sign with AEW, along with friends The Young Bucks, Adam Page and Cody Rhodes. In Kenny Omega’s last NJPW match, he was defeated by Hiroshi Tanahashi in a five star match that wowed audiences and reminded NJPW fans what they would be missing out.
Kenny Omega had won the IWGP Heavyweight Championship earlier that year in an incredible match with former champion Kazuchika Okada. The Canadian wrestler defeated Okada at Dominian 6.9 in a two-out-of-three falls match to win his first and only Heavyweight title in New Japan Pro Wrestling. Omega defeated Okada 2-1 in the match, which lasted over an hour and was voted match of the year, as well as earning a ridiculous seven star rating from Dave Melzter.
Kenny Omega is one of the all time greats in the ring, and his last match anywhere would have been special. However, facing the Ace himself in the biggest stage NJPW has to offer is the best way anyone could have their last match. Kenny Omega’s last NJPW match vs Hiroshi Tanahashi is one both men will be proud of in the years to come.
