Gunther vs Cody Rhodes Main Eventing WrestleMania 40, Reports Suggest

Next years WrestleMania main event could finally not feature Roman Reigns, with Cody Rhodes vs Gunther pencilled in for WrestleMania 40.

The two stars have never wrestled one-on-one before, but did face off as the final two in the 2023 Royal Rumble (which was won by Cody Rhodes).

This gave fans a glimmer of what a match between the two would be like, which could have been a preview for the main event of WrestleMania 40.

Shortly after last night’s May 22, 2023 episode of WWE Raw went off the air, WRKD Wrestling tweeted:

While it’s still early, discussions have taken place for #WWERaw’s main event for WrestleMania 40 to potentially be Cody Rhodes vs. Gunther.

Both superstars have expressed interest in working with each other in the past and are seen as the top face and heel on the Raw roster.

Cody Rhodes returned from a big injury to enter number 30 in the 2023 Royal Rumble, to the biggest pop of the night. He came opposite Gunther, who was the first man in the match and lasted 75 minutes.

There encounter was an impressive display, especially from Gunther as he entered the second hour of his time in the bout. He broke the record for the longest time in the match, but fell to eventually winner Cody Rhodes.

He will want to get his revenge in the main event fo WrestleMania 40, if reports about the Cody Rhodes vs Gunther match are true.

While this would be a dream match for many, it would indicate that Cody Rhodes will not “finish the story” against Roman Reigns next year.

After his loss in this years WrestleMania, it was expected that Rhodes would go into next year’s with a target firmly on the back of Roman Reigns, and would relish in the opportunity to finally beat The Tribal Chief, to end his 1000+ day reign as champion.

If Gunther does wrestle Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 40, it is likely it will be for the World Heavyweight Championship, the new belt introduced for the Raw roster (because nobody is good enough to beat Roman Reigns).
