Edge Reveals Hating Matt Hardy Storyline With Lita

In 2005 one of the biggest scandals in wrestling played out in front of our very eyes on TV. He feud between Matt Hardy and Edge over the latter’s affair with Lita was one of the most heated feuds in wrestling history, and for one good reason – it was real.

Matt Hardy and Team Extreme teammate Lita were in a relationship for six years up until that point and has plans to marry eventually. They were together in the WWE on the same roster for years, but when Lita was drafted to Smackdown she soon began an affair with Edge.

The pair broke up in February 2005 and Hardy was fired from the company soon after. This was due to improper conduct over social media and some choice comments aimed towards the two through various different media. Fans were furious and begged for his re-hiring, chanting “You screwed Matt” at both Edge and Lita for many weeks.

Eventually, Matt Hardy was hired back and begun a feud on TV with Edge. He broke the fourth wall multiple times, calling Edge and Lita by their real names (Adam and Amy) as he attacked them week on week. This led to multiple matches, including a cage match when Hardy hit a giant leg drop from the top onto Edge, although the Rated-R Superstar ultimately won the rivalry and went on to become the WWE Champion.

However, Edge hated feuding with Matt Hardy at them time.

Edge Hated The Matt Hardy and Lita Storyline

Speaking to Kurt Angle as part of The Kurt Angle Show, Edge revealed that he “didn’t enjoy any of” his rivalry with Matt Hardy in 2004. He revealed that he accepted his part he played in the cheating and decided to do the best he could to make it work and “make some money”.

He did note that it wasn’t because of Matt Hardy that he hated it. In fact, he loved working with Hardy who he had been friends with for years. However, he hated the situation that he and Lita had put him in and took responsibility for that.

“I think when everything with Matt [Hardy] and [Lita], I didn’t enjoy any of that, that was hard.” Edge said, speaking with WWE Hall of Famer Kurt Angle,

“It was a position that I put myself in and thought okay, I made my bed, I just got to deal with this. Then I thought okay, we’re here now, how can we pull a positive? Let’s make some money. That’s what we did. This is the situation, now let’s try and get something good out of this pretty lousy scenario. The matches were [good] though because I loved working with Matt,” revealed Edge.
