WrestleMania 39 – vs Roman Reigns

Despite debuting in the WWE in 2007, it took 16 more years for Cody Rhodes to finally main event a WrestleMania event.

The match came at the end of a journey that took The American Nightmare out of WWE, over to Japan and then helping to set up the company’s biggest competitor since WCW in 2001.

Forming AEW alongside The Young Bucks and Kenny Omega, he became the anti-WWE poster boy for a number of years.

Resentful for his years of poor booking on the main roster (special shoutout to Stardust), he had to leave the company in 2016 and do literally anything else.

After some incredible five-star matches in AEW, he left the company at the beginning of 2022 to return to the WWE. He re-debuted at WrestleMania 38, answering Seth Rollins’ open challenge, answering the call as the crowd welcomed back the prodigal son.

He beat Rollins (and went on to beat him three times in a row, without defeat) before suffering an injury that kept him out for the rest of 2022. Cody Rhodes returned to the WWE at the 2023 Royal Rumble, entering at number 30 to win the whole thing.

This set up a huge WrestleMania main event bout against Roman Reigns. Holding the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship for nearly 1000 days, The Tribal Chief was the top star in the company and one of the most legendary champions of all time.

Cody Rhodes took on Roman Reigns in the main event of WrestleMania 39 (Night 2), in a star-making performance from The American Nightmare.

With his wife Brandi, daughter Liberty and the son of Brodie Lee, Negative 1, at ringside, he had all the support in the world he needed. However, he also had 80,000 fans singing along to his entrance music, which also helped.

Roman Reigns defeated Cody Rhodes in the main event of WrestleMania 39 Night 2, pinning him after interference from Solo Sikoa.
