The Story Behind Cody Rhodes Tattoos, Explained

Hamish Woodward

Cody Rhodes has become famous in recent years for his tattoos. He has no means got the most tattoos in the WWE or AEW roster, but the ones he has gotten have been the most spoken about in years.

He was always known as one man on the roster who never had any tattoos. Unlike his brother Goldust, who has many, many tattoos underneath his shiny bodysuit, Cody Rhodes only had his first ink done some time in 2018.

Cody Rhodes Tattoos

Dream

Cody Rhodes got his first tattoo a couple of years after leaving the WWE in 2016. He walked out of the company after growing sick and tired of his Stardust character as well as grieving the death of his father, The American Dream Dusty Rhodes.

Cody left WWE in 2016 due to his horrific time as Stardust. He walked out on the company and plied his trade on the independent scene, eventually wrestling in huge companies like TNA, ROH and NJPW. It was during this time he got his first tattoo, which was one in honor of his father.

At some point in 2018, Cody Rhodes had a tattoo of the word “Dream” across his chest by his heart. This was a reference to Dusty Rhodes, his father who went by the name “The American Dream”. He was referred to as Dream by many of his friends, including Stephanie McMahon on television during a tense segment in 2013.

The tattoo was over Cody Rhodes heart to indicate his love for his dad, a touching tribute to a wrestler that touched the heart of many wrestlers and fans over the past 50 years.

Cody Rhodes Neck Tattoo

We all knew it was coming. Cody Rhodes tattoo that he revealed at AEW Revolution 2020 is possibly the worst tattoo in the history of wrestling. It completely turned the fans against him that night and I firmly believe he would still be in AEW and beloved by the fans had he not go an awful neck tattoo in early 2020.

He revealed the neck tattoo during his entrance for his match against MJF at the event. Cody Rhodes tattoo covered the entire right side of his neck, with a garish red and blue colour scheme that really did not sit well with anybody.

Even worse, the tattoo was of the logo he used to represent his brand within wrestling. It was his “American Nightmare” logo, which is the equivalent of the Young Bucks getting “The Elite” tattooed all over their faces. It would be a terrible idea, yet nobody can tell Cody Rhodes what to do – not even his wife.

He Almost Got A Legacy Tattoo Before Wrestlemania 26

While Cody Rhodes first tattoo was the “dream” across his chest, he almost made a big mistake when he wrestled in the WWE. The young star was gearing up for his first match at Wrestlemania in 2010, as he was set to face off with Randy Orton and Ted DiBiase Jr at Wrestlemania 26.

The bout pitted the three men against one another after spending years teaming together. The trio were known as “Legacy“, a play on the fact that they were all second or third generation superstars. This was a huge moment in Cody Rhodes WWE career and he almost got a tattoo to remember the moment from.

Speaking on latest episode of “My Mom’s Basement“, Cody Rhodes revealed he almost got a tattoo of the “Legacy” logo on his hand prior to the match. This was to honor his first Wrestlemania match and pay tribute to the men who had worked with him for years. Luckily, Kofi Kingston talked him out of it and he never got that as a tattoo.

“I almost got a tattoo on my hand of the Legacy logo. Kofi Kingston was the one to tell me absolutely not to do that, and yes, Legacy was cool and having this first real WrestleMania [match] and taking the walk – but it’s not that place on the card that you need this tattoo.”
