When it comes to the greatest WWE superstar of all time, Edge has to be in the discussion.
The Rated-R Superstar has had some of the best matches in WWE history, sacrificing his body in many ladder, TLC and Hell in a Cell matches but to name a few.
Edge is an eleven-time World Champion in WWE. He has won multiple WWE and World Heavyweight Championships, including a record-breaking seven time World Heavyweight title reigns.
He did have the record for the most Championships in WWE history, but his tally of 31 was overtaken by R-Truth and his 40 million 24/7 Championship reigns.
Edge famously retired in 2011, putting an end to a brilliant near 20 year career that earned him numerous accolades. He suffered neck injuries so bad that taking one more bump could have put him in a wheelchair for life. He was subsequently inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, and was the youngest ever inductee at his time of induction.
However, the 2020 Royal Rumble was the host of the one of the best WWE returns of all time. He came out at number 21, shocking the world and returning to the wrestling world for the first time in nine years.
He would suffer injuries at the hands of Randy Orton soon after, before returning at the next years Royal Rumble.
Edge entered at number one in the 2021 Royal Rumble. Outlasting the entire field and winning his second Royal Rumble Match.
He went on to face both Roman Reigns and Daniel Bryan (AEW’s Bryan Danielson) in the WWE title match at Wrestlemania, which Reigns won.
In his career, Edge has had some of the best matches on any card he was on. He can work with anyone, and can playing the snivelling heel and the most sympathetic babyface.
Edge can play both the killer and the coward, and that versatility has earned him a spot on the list of the best WWE wrestlers ever.
In this article, we will take a look at the 10 best matches in Edge’s career. We have previously done similar articles on the likes of Jeff Hardy and John Cena, so check those out after this one.
10. vs The Undertaker – Hell in a Cell Match (Summerslam 2008)
The first match on this list was the culmination of a classic feud for Edge. Edge had been feuding with the Undertaker for over a year, since he cashed in his recently won Money in the Bank contract to steal the World Heavyweight Championship from the Deadman.
The Undertaker defeated Edge at Wrestlemania 24 in a fantastic match, but the feud did not end there.
The rivalry included Vickie Guerrero banning the Undertaker’s Hell’s Gate submission move, and eventually even banishing the Phenom from WWE entirely.
The pair continued to feud up until Summerslam, with many twists and turns, to the most brutal match type in WWE, the Hell in a Cell. The match went nearly thirty minutes and saw the Undertaker brutalise the Rated R Superstar.
Chair, tables, ladders, all sort of menacing weapons were brought out for the Undertaker to finally get his revenge on the man who terrorised him for the past 12 months. He pinned Edge with a tombstone piledriver to finally put an end to the epic Edge vs The Undertaker feud, with one of the best matches of Edge’s WWE career.
9. vs Roman Reigns & Daniel Bryan – WWE Championship (Wrestlemania 37)
Roman Reigns continued his unwanted dominance over the WWE roster in the run up to Wrestlemania 37.
He had been the focal point of the show since the Shield split in 2014, and WWE had finally decided to steer into the skid and turn him heel. With that, he became a star with his Tribal Chief gimmick.
Edge won the Royal Rumble from the number one spot, marking his return from injury for the second year in a row. He earned his spot in the main event of night two of Wrestlemania to face Reigns, and was joined by fan favourite Daniel Bryan.
Like Edge, Danielson had also been forced to retire from in-ring action, before returning to wrestling after a number of years out. They joined WWE Champion Roman Reigns, who himself missed a year of action battling a bout of Leukaemia.
The match was as action packed as they came, and at times you believed any man could walk out of the arena with the WWE Championship. However, despite fan opinion being divided between Edge and Bryan to win, it was Roman Reigns who won the match and retained the title.
He pinned both men at once, stacking them on top of each other and getting the three count to continue his dominance over the WWE. All three men in the match were brilliant wrestlers and showcased it well in this match. It certainly deserves a spot on Edge’s best matches in WWE.
8. vs Kurt Angle – Hair vs Hair (Judgement Day 2002)
Next on the list of best Edge matches is one with a very unique stipulation – it’s a hair vs hair match against Kurt Angle.
This was a common match type in Mexico, where hair vs hair or mask vs mask matches were usually matches that ended blood feuds between two luchadors.
Edge was just starting out as a main event star in the year prior to this match. He was the breakout performer from his tag team with Christian, and looked to be on the way to being a top star in the company.
Kurt Angle had become one of the biggest stars in wrestling. A multi-time WWE Champion, he had been the hero of the WWE during the Invasion angle, saving Team WWF by turning on the Alliance and keeping WWE in the hands of Vince McMahon.
It was a huge showdown between two men who could headline WWE for the next decade to come.
Edge was the victor in the match. Despite protests and escape attempts, Edge shaved the already balding head of Angle, embarrassing him greatly in one of Edge’s best matches.
7. vs Hardy Boyz (with Christian) – Tag Team Ladder Match (No Mercy 1999)
The rivalry between the Hardy Boyz and Edge & Christian was one of the hottest tag team feuds in WWE. The two sets of brothers (well, Edge and Christian used to be) took part in a number of legendary matches against each other, often utilising the stipulation of ladders.
This was the first time the two teams had faced off in a ladder match. It was also the first time a tag team ladder match had taken place inside WWE. It was a historic match, and both teams were in no mood to just accept the history making moment and let it lie.
However, they chose to go all out, and put their bodies on their line to have an entertaining match that redefined the ladder match in WWE.
It made fans look at both teams in a different way, and despite the Hardy Boyz winning the money suspended from the ceiling, it was Edge, Christian, Jeff and Matt would had one of the best matches of each man’s career.
6. vs Eddie Guerrero – No Disqualification (WWE Smackdown)
Smackdown in 2002 was one of the best products WWE have ever put on. Paul Heyman led Smackdown to new heights, building countless new stars and putting on entertaining shows weekly.
Two of the famous “Smackdown Six” had one of the best matches of both men’s career, when Edge took on Eddie Guerrero in a No Disqualification match.
The pair had been put into a number of matches by Paul Heyman, trading victories on pay-per-views and unable to decide who was the better man. This led to a rubber match on Smackdown, with the No DQ stipulation added so that a winner was decided by any means necessary.
Edge was the victor in the end. He hit Guerrero with an Edge-o-cution off a ladder, slamming Eddie Guerrero into the mat and winning the match with the three count.
The match was every bit the match that fans expected seeing two great talents stepping foot into the ring, and both men showed their main event credentials in all of their matches.
5. vs Seth Rollins – Hell in a Cell (WWE Crown Jewel 2021)
Edge’s return in 2021 has brought some of the best matches of his career. However, the best one so far has been his Hell in a Cell matches against Seth Rollins.
The match took place in Saudi Arabia, as part of WWE’s billion dollar deal to sports wash the murderous political regime. Despite the Saudi Governments awful views and actions against women, minorities and journalists, they WWE lots of money so here’s another show from Riyadh.
The match sparked the end of the long term Seth Rollins vs Edge feud. The pair had a handful of matches prior to this, with each man winning one time a piece. This was a grudge match, inside the demonic structure where the wrestlers who have to try and survive, let alone win.
Edge won the brutal encounter, attacking Rollins with a chain before a curb stomp onto a chair put Rollins away for good. Despite the circumstances surrounding the bout, the in-ring action was superb and showed that Edge had not missed a step, despite 9 years away from the ring.
The match was also one of the best WWE matches of 2021.
4. First Ever TLC Match – WWE Tag Tea Championship (Summerslam 2000)
Edge & Christian walked into Summerslam 2000 with a huge task on their hands. They sought to retain their WWE Tag Team Championships, but had one of the toughest tasks imaginable.
The match was the first match ever of it’s kind. It was the first ever TLC match, and was contested between three of the top teams in WWE. Edge & Christian took on the Dudley Boys and the Hardy Boyz in one of each men’s best ever matches.
Whilst the Triangle Ladder match months prior at Wrestlemania 2000 was essentially a TLC match, this was the first to go under the name TLC.
Huge bumps were taken, and you’d have a hard time telling Jeff Hardy to not jump off a ladder through a table.
Edge & Christian won the match. As they did so many of these multi-man matches, they climbed the ladders and retrieved the title belts. It would not be the last ladder match they competed in, and certainly not the last on this list.
3. vs John Cena – World Heavyweight Championship (Backlash 2000)
Some have named Edge as John Cena’s best rival. There can be arguments between Edge and CM Punk, but one thing is for sure. Some of Edge and John Cena’s best matches have been against one another.
The pair feuded on and off for over three years, over various World Championships. However, the rivalry came to a climactic end at Backlash 2009, where they battled for the World Heavyweight Championship. Cena defeated Edge and Big Show to win the title at Wrestlemania 25, then faced the Rated-R Superstar at the following pay-per-view.
Thanks to interference from The Big Show, Edge would regain the championship he lost at Wrestlemania, in a match that wowed fans worldwide. Dave Meltzer even rated it at a 4.5 stars.
2. vs Kurt Angle & Chris Benoit – with Rey Mysterio (No Mercy 2002)
The Smackdown six era of Smackdown was one of the best in companies history, in-ring wise. The talent of the six men was unrivaled, the combination of any of the six wrestlers was guaranteed to produce brilliant matches.
The six men who made Smackdown great were:
- Kurt Angle
- Chris Benoit
- Edge
- Eddie Guerrero
- Chavo Guerrero
- Rey Mysterio.
Angle and Benoit are two of the finest technical wrestlers in history. Despite their talent, they had a dysfunctional tag team, which was an interesting and fun dynamic. Despite this, they were a strong unit and one of the best teams in the company.
Angle made Edge tap out to the ankle lock, but the match was one of Edge’s best due to the incredible in ring prowess of the four men. Four of the best of all time were in the ring together. It was destined for greatness.
However, it is only number two on the list. I think you may know what it number one…
1. TLC 2 – with Christian (Wrestlemania X7)
The best matches Edge has ever been in is one of the best matches of all time. It also took place at the best Wrestlemania of all time, and even Stone Cold Steve Austin called it the “Match of the night”
The three teams in the match were some that were part of the greatest ladder matches of all time. D-Von and Bubba Ray, aka the Dudley Boys were one of the teams. The others were Matt Hardy and Jeff Hardy, the brothers from North Carolina were the second. The third were the titular Edge and his partner, the man now known as Christian Cage.
The Dudley’s waltzed into Wrestlemania X7 as the WWE Tag Team Champions, but they would not leave with the belts. That honour fell to Edge and Christian, who climbed atop a table, atop a ladder, to secure the championships and win the match.
The match was balls to the wall ridiculous. It was dangerous. It was extreme. Jeff Hardy nearly died twelve times, which is 7 more times than a regular Jeff Hardy match.
The highlight of the match has been replayed into oblivion. Jeff Hardy hung from the belts, 15 feet in the air, before Edge leaps from a ladder, spearing him in mid air as he comes crashing down onto the mat. How Jeff didn’t die was a mystery, but it was still one of the greatest moments in Wrestlemania history.
It will go down as the best Edge match in WWE, and potentially THE best match in WWE history.
With Edge’s rumored debut in AEW, we could see a rematch of Edge & Christian Cage against Jeff Hardy & Matt Hardy, albeit 25-years older and much less mobile.
