John Cena 2023

Former WWE Champion John Cena is reportedly set for a huge return to WWE in 2023, just in time for an appearance at Wrestlemania 39. The 16 time champion last wrestled against Roman Reigns at last years Summerslam, losing to the Universal Champion who has since gone on to win also the WWE Championship.

Fans have wondered where John Cena has been, given that he hasn’t wrestled at all in the 2022 calendar year. If he doesn’t have a match at some point between now and New Year’s Day, it will be the first year since his debut in 2002 that he hasn’t wrestled a single match all year. As he is still the biggest star in the WWE, pending a return of Hollywood star The Rock, Triple H will be keen to get him back into the fold for another bout, likely in 2023.

He has been quiet over the past year, focusing instead on his acting career. John Cena has been making a name for himself in Hollywood, carving out his niche as a comedic actor. Starring roles in The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker have build up his stock and he is knocking on the door of big roles in huge movies. Rumours he could take on roles in Marvel some time soon have come out, so he could be on the verge of breaking out as The Rock did a decade prior.

In the meantime however, professional wrestling always comes calling. According to a new report/rumour from Xero News, John Cena looks like he is returning at Wrestlemania 39 for a match, as well as taking part on the weekly TV shows (Raw and Smackdown) on the run up to the event – known as “The Road to Wrestlemania”.

“2023 Road to Wrestlemania will be fire as some say and hey also may involve just a bit of Hustle Loyalty and Respect from early on that road” the site claimed on Twitter

In addition, WrestleVotes spoke to GiveMeSport and revealed that Cena is expected to be wrestling at WrestleMania 39 next year in Los Angeles, although it’s unclear who he would wrestle at the event.

The Twitter account stated, “Cena should be there, and Cena should be wrestling.

“WrestleMania is still WrestleMania and it’s in Los Angeles. If Cena is legitimately trying to be ‘the next Rock’ you should perform at WrestleMania in Hollywood, and I think he’ll be there and I think it’ll be wrestling. I’ll leave it at that.”

The biggest rumour going was that John Cena vs Austin Theory was going to be the match to take place this Spring, with Vince McMahon building him up as “The Next Cena”. Vince has since retired and Theory’s push has been put on hold, including trying to cash his Money in the Bank contract on United States Champion Seth Rollins, for some odd reason, and losing. Even worse, it was during his open challenge, so he didn’t even need to use the contract. It was all around stupid and doesn’t bode well for a potential Cena match.

Another option could be a final match with long-time rival Edge. John Cena and Edge feuded during the mid 2000s over the WWE Championship, which lead to some iconic moments and fantastic matches – like the live sex celebration between Edge and Lita. Edge vs John Cena would be a legendary call back and a fantastic match for Cena to go out on, if it is indeed his last match.
