Sheamus vs Roman Reigns Championship Match Was Scrapped, Reveals Star

Sheamus has revealed how a match between himself and Roman Reigns was cancelled, following the War Games match at Survivor Series 2022.

Roman Reigns has been the world champion for over 940 days, beating every and any challenger who comes up against in in pursuit of gold.

The most recent victim of his dominance was Cody Rhodes, with The American Nightmare losing in controversial fashion in the main event of WrestleMania 39.

Roman Reigns retained his WWE Championship vs Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 39.

However, one man who Roman Reigns has not defended against in this current reign is The Celtic Warrior, Sheamus.

The Irishman actually has history with The Tribal Chief. Sheamus vs Roman Reigns was a WWE Championship feud in 2015 and 2016, after Sheamus cashed in his Money in the Bank contract on Reigns at Survivor Series 2015.

7 years later, Roman Reigns vs Sheamus looked to happen once again, but was cancelled by WWE management.

Sheamus vs Roman Reigns

Sheamus was asked about a potential bout with Roman Reigns, during a recent appearance on Ryan Satin’s Out of Character podcast.

The Celtic Warrior explained that the original build up to the War Games match at Survivor Series would have focused around a Roman Reigns vs Sheamus, for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship.

However, due to the story changing direction to focus on The Bloodline and Sami Zayn, the focus was shifted away from Sheamus against Roman Reigns, with that match being scrapped indefinitely.

Speaking to Ryan Satin, Sheamus said about potentially wrestling Roman Reigns;

I think the story for us, I just felt at the time the story was, the story was not really [about us]. We were just there as the opponents. The story hadn’t really heated up to that point.

It was going in a different direction…which is just the way it is sometimes with storylines. So as I said, it was cool to go in there and be involved in a match like that.

But it’s not something I am gonna look back in my career and go ‘Yeah man the first Wargames match I was in, it was in the main roster yeah.’ You know what I mean? I don’t think so.

Then, when asked about the potential match against Roman Reigns, Sheamus clarified,

“It was heading that way and then things changed. Things change all the time. Creative stuff happens. It was heading in that direction and just took a U-turn.”

As of the time of writing, Roman Reigns has not defended the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship against Sheamus.

Sheamus lost to GUNTHER at WrestleMania 39, and could move into the world title hunt following the event, although anything could happen with Vince McMahon back in charge of the WWE.
