The main event of WrestleMania 39 saw one of the most controversial endings of all time.

As is tradition for Roman Reigns at WrestleMania, he won in the main event when he had absolutely no right to.

The stage was set for Cody Rhodes to finally win the WWE Championship, accomplishing a dream that his father Dusty Rhodes failed to achieve during his career.

The match came a year after Cody returned to the WWE at WrestleMania 38, beating Seth Rollins in an impromptu match that blew the roof off the arena.

The main event of WrestleMania 39 Night 2 should have been Cody Rhodes’ crowning moment in the WWE. Sadly, interference from The Usos, Paul Heyman and Solo Sikoa cost him the match and his destiny.

But why did Cody Rhodes lose to Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39? Keep reading to find out the truth about Triple H’s decision to keep the belt on Roman Reigns.

Why Did Cody Rhodes Lose At WrestleMania 39?

Cody Rhodes lost to Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39 because the story of The Bloodline is not finished in the WWE.

This was the justification given by Triple H in the post-WrestleMania press conference, after the controversial finish to the main event.

Speaking to journalists after the show, Triple H claimed that “the story never finishes” in the WWE, and that Monday Night Raw will show the next chapter in the legendary reign of Roman Reigns.

“Maybe for a lot of people a shocking outcome, what I will say about that is it’s always interesting to me when people say, ‘how could that happen’ or ‘how could they do that in that moment.’ It’s almost perfectly spelled out in this story.

‘I need to finish the story.’ In WWE, the story never finishes. Tomorrow night on Raw, it’s sold out Crypto Arena, the story continues. The story takes another chapter, we just got to the end of another chapter but the story continues and that’s where this gets interesting to me. That is what’s the most amazing thing about this business, the story never ends.”

A further report from Fightful Select has shed some light on when the decision was made to have Rhodes lose.

They revealed that the decision to have Roman Reigns beat Cody Rhodes was not one made on the day of the show, but made weeks prior to WrestleMania 39.

While many people thought that Cody Rhodes was a sure-fire choice for a new WWE Champion, booker Triple H thought differently.

This means that Roman Reigns remains Undisputed WWE Champion, extending his legendary title reign past 940 days.

It is currently unknown who will beat Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship, although WrestleVotes theorised that it could be Cody Rhodes, Bray Wyatt or even The Rock.

Speaking to Louis Dangoor of GiveMeSport, the WrestleVotes Twitter account revealed that the company now has an idea on who is going to defeat Roman Reigns.

They have an idea of who is going to beat Roman.

I don’t know specifically if it’s Cody. I don’t know if it’s The Rock. I don’t know if it’s Bray. But I think there’s a handful of guys that they would say ‘alright, this makes sense for future.’

But I don’t think it’s happening anytime soon, to be honest with you.
