In the build up for WrestleMania 39, it seemed certain that Roman Reigns vs The Rock would be in the coveted main event spot.
The Rock’s last match was at WrestleMania 32, and the movie star is facing a decade outside of the ring.
However, a bout with his cousin Roman Reigns for the WWE Championship seemed inevitable. Sadly, The Rock turned down the match.
Instead, Roman Reigns beat Cody Rhodes in one of the best matches with the worst endings of all time. This went down horribly with the crowd, but they still held out some hope.
Many fans have been hoping that the bout would take place next year, at WrestleMania 40.
Unfortunately, this does not look to be the case.

While fans are now sick of Roman Reigns’ Championship reign, The Rock will sadly not be the man to end it.
The cousin vs cousin match has for years been rumoured, with the rumours mounting after the pair appeared together at the 2015 Royal Rumble.
However, cold water has been poured over all the speculation, by the Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer.
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer said that while Rock is not at all committed to wrestling at WrestleMania 40, despite leaving a “crack” open for a match.
On the latest Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer said this about The Rock vs Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40.
“Reigns had pretty much gone through everyone at the top tier on the roster, and with the exception of GUNTHER or, of course, The Rock. Dwayne Johnson, when he turned down this year due to schedule, did leave a crack in the door open about possibly doing Philadelphia at WrestleMania 40 next year, but that was far from a commitment and certainly nothing anyone should count on happening. There didn’t appear to be another new challenger on the horizon.”
As noted by Meltzer, The Rock turned down a huge main event match against Roman Reigns at this years WrestleMania.
He has never been closer to a return and a match vs Reigns. With him turning 50 last year, it seems sad to say but The Rock may be done for good, and retired from the ring.
He is one of the biggest movie stars in the words, making more money than he ever would in wrestling. Given his injuries last time in his matches vs John Cena, it is wise from The Rock to stay out of the ring and stay retired from wrestling.
The Rock vs Roman Reigns will not happen. Roman Reigns will be champion forever. Believe that.
WrestleMania 40 will take place on April 6th and April 7th 2024, and will be the culmination of a years-worth of storylines in the WWE.
